The 13th Guest
Underlying tensions permeate the air of Beckworth Manor where twelve people have gathered on Halloween night each prepared to tell an unusual or macabre story, or in the case of the visiting medium, conduct a seance. The 13th Guest is a delicious blend of horror and dark humour that will take you into the realm of the supernatural where creatures hide in wait for mortals who dare to trespass. Is the 13th guest human or a spirit come back from the grave?
Derek Beckworth has no idea how his world is going to be turned upside-down when his mistress and his wife spend an evening in the same room. Throw into the mix a beautiful actress, a psychic, a retired Colonel, an artist, a young lawyer and a couple of strangers and the resulting cocktail will keep you entertained into the dark hours of the night.
Excerpts from The 13th Guest
Leona entered the room in time to see George looking somewhat surprised as Angie literally pulled him down beside her on a loveseat near the fireplace. Leona muttered something under her breath.
“Very well, Madame.” Juliet removed a pouch from her pocket and slipped the necklace inside. She opened the safe and quickly added the rest of the jewellery to the pouch. She turned back to the bed.
“All done, Madame.” Without opening her eyes, Marguerite mumbled something. “Good-night, Madame.” Juliet extinguished the lamp and quietly left the room. She retraced her steps to the stable where Bert waited with their horses.
Gerry walked back around the building and headed for the screen door. A beery blast of smoke and heat accompanied the still-playing honky-tonk music. Several men and women occupying the bar stools stared at her when she walked in; people at the tables were too busy with their food to pay much attention.
“Sit anywhere you want, miss,” the bartender called. “Alice’ll be right out.”
Out of the corner of her eye, Gerry was vaguely aware of a man watching her from the shadows of the washroom hallway.
Those are just three short quotes from the characters who are woven into The 13th Guest.
And who IS the 13th Guest? All will be revealed at the end of the book.
Editorial Review by Anne-Marie Reynolds:
****The 13th Guest was interesting. Although it is a complete story in its own right, the addition of a separate story from each guest made it more intriguing and, perhaps, a little different from the norm. Throughout the whole story there is a vein of mystery. You know something is going to happen; you just don't know what it is or who is involved until the end. Very nicely pulled together and could perhaps make a good TV movie with a little bit of tweaking and polishing. Overall, this was a good story and it did keep me reading to the very end.
Our Readers Say:
S.W.H. - I'm happy to let you know that you have your first review on Amazon UK. The 13th Guest isn't the sort of book I normally read, but I found it well-paced and humourous. I loved the way you crafted the stories within the story to move it along. I completely enjoyed it.
D.T. - Started reading The 13th Guest last night. Kept me up past my bedtime!!
T.D. - I just finished reading your book and enjoyed it very much, thank you for the backyard get away.
H.L. - Wow! Really enjoyed this. A great read!
S.M. - I read 13th from cover to cover on the plane back. The different story lines are brilliantly conceived and very well written. The variety is astounding. You certainly caught me on some surprise endings. Each story I read, I marked as my favourite. Then the next became my favourite. Then the next, etc. Well done indeed. Easily the best book I read on holidays. The five hour flight became so short I didn't realize it was time to land.
S.M. - Reread The 13th Guest last night. I am still amazed at the variety of plots but all fitting together. The binding overlay story easily takes them out of the realm of a short story compilation.
J.I.H. - The 13th Guest was brilliant! I loved the stories; they were as original as Alfred Hitchcock. Job well done! So when is your next book due? I'll be waiting. Review on Amazon.
SLMC - A light look at the spooky. A good range of characters leading us down the the path to a conclusion to each story that satisfied my curiosity as to the outcome. The conversational interactions between characters is very real and flows seamlessly into the main plots of the stories. I didn't have to have the bedroom light on full, but I didn't dare to dim them.
